Chavez - Repeat The Ending (1994)

Side A: Repeat The Ending

Side B: Hack The Sides Away

Label: Matador Records

Matrix: OLE 104-7

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

Just got this in the mail 2 days ago and couldn’t wait to rip it. This band is absolutely insane. The guitar parts sound similar to something coming from Ash Bowie (of Polvo), however, Matt Sweeney somehow finds a way to get the most melodic vocal lines to shine through.

I’ve shown Chavez to a handful of friends and most reactions reveal that the jagged/dissonant guitars prevent any semblance of a hook. I hope some (if not most) of you feel differently. Chavez is overwhelmingly underrated and should be taken in large doses at ear-splitting volumes.

Four Tet / Hella (DIV/ORCE Series #1 | 2004)

Side A: Both When I Am Alone and We Are

Side B: Stephen Hawking Has A Posse

Label: Ache Records

Matrix: ACHE013

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

While looking through my external hard-drive I found a rip of this that I did when living at The Zappa Zappa Zappa House. I borrowed this from one of my roommates at the time and looking at these files I noticed a little work needed to be done to polish them up (editing out a few clicks/pops as well as amplifying and splitting the wave).

Besides the technical stuff, unless you’ve been living under a rock you’re aware of Four Tet and Hella. I don’t need to say much more. This split was part of the DIV/ORCE Series… even though 7 more splits came about after this release, this split is definitely (imo) the most notable.

1994! - FCKYRHED (2010)

Side A: King Kong Stompin Man / Shut Up The Fuck Up / Acknowledge The Rage / Luke Gone Leidy

Side B: Thank All You Guy Helpening / Damn You’s / A+ Brain

Label: Inkblot Records / Square of Opposition Records

Matrix: IBR.015.5 / SofO.033

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

I got this record in a trade with Square of Opposition Records last winter. I didn’t have any of their material prior to this and had just seen them once at Strangelight in Chicago w/ Algernon Cadwallader and Grown Ups. This record was very surprising. The production value and overall tones being created from this guitar/drums duo is overly rad. The mastering of the vinyl sounds fantastic (probably in part to the 12” being a total of 18+ minutes and running at 45 rpm).

Rather obvious comparisons can be made while listening to this record. These dudes are from Lancaster, Pennsylvania so you can expect them to be lumped in with Snowing, Algernon, etc. etc. However, they stand apart in their ability to compose riffs that utterly slay some (dare I say most..) of their harmonious tour-mates.

This rip is from the 1st press that was limited to 500 copies. SofO did just release a 2nd press of this that includes all new artwork and a bonus DVD. I highly recommend you pick up a copy here (it’s only 12 bones you tightwad!)

Breadwinner - Supplementary Cig (1994)

Side A: Knighton / Exploder

Side B: Turtlehead

Label: Merge Records

Matrix: MRG 052.5

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

I can’t seem to find much on this band online. I picked up a copy of their discography disc entitled “The Burner” and later picked this up through the online Merge Records store when purchasing a copy of Polvo’s “Celebrate The New Dark Age”. Here’s their semi-bio from Merge’s website:

“Breadwinner, based out of Richmond Virginia, was comprised of: Pen Rollings (guitar), Bobby Donne (bass), and Chris Farmer (drums). Their music is the definition of math rock, a calculated and electrifying mash-up of metal signatures. Merge Records released two 7-inch singles and one full-length CD, “The Burner” (1994) after the band had broken up.

Nice Nice - There Will Be Slogans (2002)

Side A: Still Flux Bandits / Call Reluctance

Side B: There Will Be Slogans

Label: White Denim Records

Matrix: White Denim #3

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

This record was loaned to me specifically for inclusion to this site. I was not at all familiar with this release until earlier today, the only solid information I found was from the release page over at the Discogs database. This record does appear to be their first release, it was put out in 2002 and was a year before their excellent full length from Temporary Residence entitled “Chrome”. This 7” is limited to 530 copies, all of which are pressed on coke-bottle clear vinyl.

This record was in excellent condition and allowed for a very easy/clean transfer. Thanks to Estevez for this brilliant loaner!

Make Believe - The Pink 7” (2004)

Side A: The Vampire’s Lament To His Nurse

Side B: Each Day Is Different and The Same As Cocks

Label: Flameshovel Records

Matrix: DIG023

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

Found this at Reckless Records in Chicago a little over a year ago. The B-side on this record is fantastic, Bobby Burg’s vocal contribution for the chorus of this track is very fitting. And of course, Sam Zurick’s guitar work on both sides of this release are simply incredible.

This record isn’t a terrific way to introduce yourself with this particular Kinsella project, I would recommend checking out their self-titled EP or their first LP “Shock of Being” for a more proper introduction. Regardless of where you start, Make Believe is a very unappreciated project from these Chicago guys, and in my opinion Make Believe is exactly what Tim needed to do after the very poor album “Eventually, All At Once” by Joan of Arc.

Seyarse - Seyarse (2002)

Side A: Remedial Learning / It Might Be A Setup

Side B: Fashion Emergency / Gypsy Switch

Label: Self-Released

Matrix: SR-001

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, 320 kbps

I found at the Corner Record Shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan on tour back in 2009. I wasn’t familiar with any Seyarse material prior to purchasing this, but I was aware that 1/2 of this band went on to form 2/3 of Piglet. Other than Piglet and Seyarse sharing members, nothing about the two bands are very similar.

The back of the jacket (just like the insert) gives up no release information, so this could be an incredibly limited pressing. If I could sum these songs up, I would say think…. Lickgoldensky meets the urgency of Orchid?
